In order to develop its ATI graphics, AMD is backing both the OpenCL programming language and Microsofts DirectX 11 APIs. The move means that AMD is looking for a way to differentiate its graphics from the Intel Larrabee initiative and Nvidias CUDA programming language for its general purpose GPUs.
